There are certain tips and hints we hear over and over again as we fight the battle of the bulge. I know you have heard them as often as I have. Today I'm re-writing three of the most common diet tips for our special post weight loss surgery way of life. I'd love to see your tips and how you have adjusted them for LivingAfterWLS.
Never go hungry.
Conventional diet tips suggest three meals a day and nutritious snacks in between. Avoiding hunger triggers means controlling our blood glucose levels. To do that effectively we should eat three high-protein meals a day (60% protein and 40% fat and carbohydrate). Between meal snacks -- if and only if we are hungry -- should be protein (protein bars/shakes, lean deli meat, eggs, low-fat cheese) or low-glycemic fruits and vegetables. Snacks are a good time to incorporate fruits and vegetables because we can benefit from the dietary fiber, vitamins, and nutrients at a time when our pouch is not already full of the essential protein. Try oranges, melons, berries, apples, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli and cauliflower.
Don't trust your eyes.
Traditional diet programs advise patients to measure portions. You know the drill: a proper protein portion is the size of a deck of cards. After weight loss surgery we have an automatic measuring device - the pouch. Initially we are told to eat until we feel the tightness and then stop. As time goes on we learn to "out-eat" the pouch by lingering over meals or including liquids with meals. Pretty soon we are shocked to realize how much we are eating. The best results are achieved when we measure portions and stop eating when that portion is consumed. Make this a habit. Find bowls or plates that hold your portion perfectly. Don't leave it to chance.
Get it done.
Complete your physical exercise as early in the day as your schedule allows. The longer in the day we postpone exercise, the less likely it is that we will accomplish our daily workout. If you must break-up workout session do cardio in the morning and save strength or flexibility training for later in the day. By doing cardio exercise in the morning you will boost your metabolism for higher burn during the day - and you will enjoy a greater sense of accomplishment and energy.
